AXA Global Healthcare for expats in Asia
AXA Global Healthcare sells international private medical insurance (IPMI) for people living or travelling abroad. IPMIAsia explains its five cover levels, the optional upgrades, how the area and excess choices work, and what the published limitations mean for an expat in Asia.
- The plans are designed for conditions that begin after you join, so people with medical history should compare insurers offering moratorium terms.
- Outpatient treatment and routine dental are upgrades rather than part of the base cover at every level.
- No Asia-only area is described: the only area choice is whether the USA is included, so the plan is worldwide-style either way.
- Annual maximums and sub-limits are not reproduced here; the Summary of Benefits supplied with your quote is the authority.
- Charges must be usual and customary for the country of treatment, which matters if you travel to Singapore or Hong Kong for care.
Five cover levels, one set of choices
AXA Global Healthcare's international product is aimed at people living or travelling abroad who want private healthcare for both routine and emergency needs. This page is about AXA Global Healthcare only, not any separate regional AXA product sold locally in Asia.
The range runs through five levels. AXA publishes a level-by-level Summary of Benefits, and the personalisation choices are the same at every level: whether to add outpatient treatment, whether to add routine dental, whether to take a per-person excess, and whether the USA is in the area of cover.
| Cover level | Personalisation shown by AXA |
|---|---|
| Foundation | Outpatient and routine dental upgrades; per-person excess; USA in or out |
| Standard | Same choices; exact benefits and sub-limits differ by level |
| Comprehensive | Same choices; exact benefits and sub-limits differ by level |
| Prestige | Same choices; exact benefits and sub-limits differ by level |
| Prestige Plus | Same choices; the top of the range |
The overall annual maximum and every sub-limit for each level are set out in the Summary of Benefits supplied with a quote. Figures are not reproduced here because the benefit document was not available when the source material was reviewed, so treat the document that comes with your quote as the authority.
Core benefits and services
Across the range, AXA's published benefits and services include:
- Emergency medical cover and cancer treatment, subject to the terms of the selected plan.
- Medical evacuation and repatriation.
- Virtual Doctor consultations, delivered through Teladoc Health.
- Mind Health support.
- A Second Medical Opinion service for an independent review of a diagnosis or treatment plan.
Outpatient treatment and routine dental care are upgrades rather than part of the base cover. If you expect to use GP and specialist appointments regularly, which is the normal pattern for a family in a city such as Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur, the outpatient upgrade is the decision to weigh first. Our guide to inpatient versus outpatient cover explains the trade-off.
Geography and the excess
Two choices shape the premium. The first is whether the area of cover includes the USA. The second is whether you take a per-person excess: you pay up to the agreed amount when you claim, and the premium is lower in return. Availability and exact terms of both are confirmed during the application.

Claims and direct payment
AXA says it can often pay a provider directly, which is what makes hospital treatment cashless in practice. AXA's current page also reports that 83.2% of eligible online claims submitted from January to December 2025 were paid within two days when all required information was provided. That is AXA's own dated service figure for a defined set of claims; it is not an independently verified average approval time and it is not a guarantee for any individual claim.
Exclusions and limitations
The published product page is clear on several points:
- The plans are designed for conditions that begin after you join, and do not cover pre-existing conditions.
- Charges must be usual and customary for the country where treatment takes place.
- Treatment outside the selected area, or against medical advice, is excluded.
- Injuries from sports for which the member is paid, and incidental treatment-arrangement costs, are listed exclusions.
The first point matters more than any other for people with medical history. If you have a condition that was diagnosed or treated before joining, compare AXA with insurers that offer a moratorium or will consider covering a declared condition. Our pre-existing conditions guide sets out how the market approaches this.
AXA Global Healthcare for expats in Asia
For an expat living in Asia, the area decision is whether to include the USA. The plan page describes only that choice, with no Asia-only area, so AXA is a worldwide-style plan either way: it covers you across Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines and Japan, and wherever else you travel, with the USA in or out. If you want a strictly regional plan to save money, compare AXA with insurers that publish one; our guide to regional versus worldwide cover in Asia explains when that is worth it.
The plan currency is not stated on the published page, so ask for it with the Summary of Benefits before comparing AXA's limits against a plan priced in US dollars. Keep the usual-and-customary rule in mind too: it means AXA pays what is reasonable for the country of treatment, which is relevant if you travel from a lower-cost country to Singapore or Hong Kong for care.
IPMIAsia includes AXA Global Healthcare in its whole-market comparison through Nomi, so you can see how the five levels price against the rest of the market for your own residence and age.

Who AXA Global Healthcare suits
A strong fit if you are in good health, want a well-known insurer behind the policy, like a clear five-step ladder with upgrades you can add or leave out, and value built-in virtual GP, mental-health and second-opinion services.
Worth comparing alternatives if you have a pre-existing condition, since the published plans are designed for conditions that begin after joining, or you want a regional area of cover. Before buying, use the current policy wording and Summary of Benefits to verify the annual maximum, sub-limits, excess and area that apply to your quote. Browse all insurers to see the alternatives.
